Frequently asked questions
What is photo metadata?
+
Photo metadata is hidden information stored inside an image file alongside the picture itself. It can include the date and time a photo was taken, the camera or phone model, editing software, author names and sometimes the exact GPS location.
What is EXIF data?
+
EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is the most common metadata standard used by cameras and phones. It records technical settings like exposure and focal length, but also the device model, capture time and, if location services were on, GPS coordinates.
Can photos contain GPS coordinates?
+
Yes. Most smartphones can save the precise latitude, longitude and altitude where a photo was taken. This happens automatically when camera location access is enabled.
Can someone find my location from a photo?
+
If a photo still contains GPS metadata, anyone who receives the original file can read the coordinates and see the location on a map — often accurate to a few meters. Some platforms strip this data on upload, but many messaging, email and file-sharing services do not.
How do I remove GPS data from a photo?
+
Drop the photo into the checker above and choose “Remove Private Metadata”. The tool removes GPS and other metadata, re-scans the result to verify it, and lets you download the clean copy.
Can Pixurity check and remove AI metadata from an image?
+
Yes, for metadata that is actually embedded in the file: Content Credentials (C2PA), IPTC digital-source-type tags that mark AI generation or editing, AI tool names in software or history fields, and prompt or workflow text written by image generators. Normal cleaning removes it together with EXIF and GPS, for free. Pixurity checks embedded metadata only — it does not judge the pixels, so “No AI-related metadata detected” does not mean an image wasn't made with AI, and removing AI metadata does not guarantee an image can't be identified as AI-generated by other methods.
Does this tool upload my photos?
+
No. Scanning and cleaning happen entirely inside your browser using JavaScript. Your photos are never sent to our servers.
Can Pixurity remove metadata from PDFs?
+
Yes. The free PDF Metadata Remover finds and removes document metadata such as author, dates, software, XMP and document IDs, locally in your browser. Encrypted PDFs aren't supported yet, and cleaning a signed PDF can invalidate its signature — Pixurity warns you first.
Are my photos stored?
+
No. Photos only exist in your browser's memory while the page is open. We do not store, log or keep copies of your images.
Does removing metadata reduce image quality?
+
No, in almost all cases. Metadata is removed without touching the image data, so the picture is byte-for-byte identical. The only exception is photos that rely on an orientation flag to display upright: those are re-encoded once at high quality so they don't appear rotated.
Can I remove metadata from multiple photos at once?
+
Yes. The Bulk tool lets you scan and clean many photos at once, see a combined privacy report, and download every cleaned photo as a normal image file — still processed locally.
What is the difference between Free and Pro?
+
Free includes the full scan, privacy report, cleaning and verification for single photos and PDFs, plus Bulk batches of up to 3 photos or 3 PDFs — no account needed. Paid plans add volume, not better cleaning: Bulk Pass ($5.99 one-time) gives 200 photos and 50 PDFs to use within 7 days; Pro Monthly and Pro Lifetime allow up to 500 photos or 100 PDFs per batch.
