What it checks

Remove author, dates and software info from a PDF

  • Document properties

Author, title, subject, keywords, creator application, producer and custom fields.

  • Dates

Creation and modification dates, including time zones.

  • XMP metadata

The embedded XMP packet, with its creator, tool and history fields listed.

  • Identifiers

Document IDs and application-specific private data.

Pixurity checks embedded metadata only. It doesn't read or judge the text on your pages, so names or other details written in the document itself stay visible.

PDF FAQ

PDF metadata questions

What metadata can a PDF contain?

A PDF can store document properties such as title, author, subject, keywords, the application that created it, the PDF producer, creation and modification dates, an XMP metadata packet, document IDs and application-specific data. Pixurity shows the values it actually finds in your file.

Can PDFs contain author information?

Yes. Word processors often copy the account or computer user name into the PDF's Author field and into XMP (dc:creator). Pixurity flags a detected author as a potential privacy finding.

Can PDFs reveal creation dates?

Yes. Most PDFs record when they were created and last modified, often with a time zone. Pixurity lists these dates and removes them when you clean the file.

Does Pixurity upload my PDF?

No. Your PDF is read, scanned and cleaned with JavaScript inside your browser. The document, its file name and its metadata are not sent to Pixurity or any other service.

Does removing PDF metadata change the document?

Pages are not changed. Pixurity removes document-level metadata structures and rewrites the PDF's object table; page content, fonts and images are copied unchanged — nothing is rasterized, re-compressed or OCR'd. The cleaned file is re-opened and checked before you can download it. PDF/A documents lose their XMP packet, which PDF/A requires, so they may no longer validate as PDF/A.

Can metadata removal invalidate a digital signature?

Yes. Changing a signed PDF breaks its signature. Pixurity warns you before cleaning a PDF that appears to be signed, asks you to confirm, and never recreates or fakes signatures.

Can I remove metadata from multiple PDFs?

Yes. The Bulk PDF Cleaner is free for up to 3 PDFs per batch and uses the same scanner, cleaner and final-file verification as the single PDF tool. Larger batches are planned for Pixurity Pro.

What happens with password-protected PDFs?

Encrypted or password-protected PDFs can't be inspected or cleaned yet. Pixurity tells you so instead of showing incomplete results, and never uploads the file or a password as a workaround.
