Remove Author Information From a PDF
A PDF can store an Author name and other document properties that never appear on its pages — sometimes carried over when a file is exported from a word processor or PDF app. Check your PDF below and remove them before sharing.

Can a PDF Contain Your Name?
Yes, a PDF can contain Author metadata even when no name is visible on any page. Not every PDF has it; it depends on the program and settings used to create the file. Depending on how the document was made, its metadata may also include:
- The software used to create the document
- The creator application
- The producer application
- Creation and modification dates
- Title, subject and keywords
- Other supported document information
Many of these fields describe software or dates rather than a person, but together they can say more about a document's origin than you might expect.
Where Is the Author Stored in a PDF?
Author information sits in the PDF's document metadata, separate from the page content. PDFs commonly keep it in two places: the document information dictionary (the "document properties" many viewers display) and an XMP metadata packet. The same name can appear in both, so removing it from one place alone may leave a copy in the other.
Author vs Creator vs Producer
- Author — usually identifies a person or account name, where present.
- Creator — often identifies the application or process the original document came from.
- Producer — often identifies the software or library that generated the PDF file.
Pixurity's report keeps these apart: Author is reported as author information, while Creator and Producer are reported as software. A Creator value naming an app is not treated as a human author.
How to Remove Author Metadata From a PDF
- Select the PDF.
- Pixurity scans supported metadata locally.
- Review the Privacy Report.
- Check the Author field and other detected document information.
- Clean the supported metadata.
- Pixurity verifies the final downloadable PDF.
- Download the cleaned PDF.
Need to do this for several documents? The bulk PDF metadata cleaner runs the same checks on a batch; larger batches are covered on the pricing page.
Does Removing the Author Change the PDF?
Pixurity is designed to remove supported document metadata without intentionally changing visible page content. It does not rasterize the PDF just to remove metadata; text stays selectable, and fonts and images are kept. Because PDFs vary, behaviour can't be guaranteed identical for every file — for example, a digital signature becomes invalid once the file changes.
Other Metadata Can Identify a Document
Deleting only the Author field, for example in a PDF editor's properties dialog, does not necessarily remove other identifying metadata. Other supported fields include:
- Creator
- Producer
- Creation and modification dates
- XMP metadata
- Document identifiers
- Software information
- Supported AI/provenance metadata, such as C2PA Content Credentials
That is why Pixurity scans the whole PDF's supported metadata rather than checking one field. Names written in the visible text, headers or footers are page content and are not changed.
Your PDF Stays on Your Device
Pixurity scans and cleans PDF metadata locally in your browser. The PDF is not uploaded to Pixurity servers for scanning or cleaning, and the metadata extracted from it is not sent there either. (Separate server features exist for optional paid accounts and payments; they never receive your files.)
What “Cleaned & Verified” Means
After cleaning, Pixurity scans the final downloadable PDF again and marks it "Cleaned & verified" only if none of its supported metadata checks find anything. This covers the metadata types Pixurity supports; it is not proof that no unknown or proprietary data format exists in the file.
PDF author questions
Can a PDF contain my name?
It can. Many PDFs have an Author field in their document properties, and some programs fill it with an account or computer user name. It isn't shown on the pages, and not every PDF has one.
How do I check who the author of a PDF is?
Add the PDF to Pixurity. The privacy report shows the Author value if one is stored, along with the other document properties it found.
How do I remove the Author field from a PDF?
After the scan, clean the PDF. Pixurity removes the Author field together with the other supported document metadata, verifies the final file and lets you download it.
What is the difference between PDF Author, Creator and Producer?
Author usually names a person or account. Creator usually names the application the document was made in, and Producer the software that wrote the PDF file. Creator and Producer normally describe software, not people.
Can a PDF still identify me after I remove the Author field?
Possibly, if only that one field is deleted. Dates, XMP metadata, document identifiers and software details can remain. Pixurity removes all supported document metadata, not just Author. Names typed on the pages themselves are not changed.
Does removing PDF metadata change the visible document?
It isn't meant to. Pages are not rasterized or re-rendered; page content, fonts and images are kept. Digitally signed PDFs lose signature validity, and PDF/A files may no longer validate as PDF/A.
Does Pixurity upload my PDF?
No. Scanning and cleaning run in your browser. The PDF and its extracted metadata are not sent to Pixurity servers for either step.
Can Pixurity remove creation and modification dates too?
Yes. Creation and modification dates in the document properties and XMP metadata are removed as part of the clean.
Can Pixurity clean a password-protected PDF?
No. If a PDF is password-protected or encrypted, Pixurity can't read it reliably, so it shows no results and does not clean it.
Is the PDF author remover free?
Yes. Checking and cleaning a single PDF is free and needs no account. Paid plans add larger bulk batches and are ad-free.
