Remove hidden metadata from PDF files

A PDF can carry information that never appears on its pages: who wrote it, which program created it, and when it was made and edited. Pixurity is a PDF metadata checker and remover that shows this information in a privacy report and removes the supported metadata before you share the document.

What PDF metadata can Pixurity find?

  • Author — often your account or computer user name. See how to remove the author from a PDF.
  • Creator and Producer — the application that made the document and the software that wrote the PDF.
  • Title, Subject and Keywords — document properties that may differ from the visible content.
  • Creation and modification dates — often with a time zone.
  • Info dictionary and XMP packet — the two main places PDFs store metadata.
  • Document identifiers — the trailer ID and application-specific private data (PieceInfo, LastModified).
  • AI and provenance information — embedded C2PA Content Credentials, where present.

Pixurity checks embedded metadata only. It doesn't read or judge the text on your pages, so names or details written in the document itself stay visible.

How Pixurity cleans PDF metadata

  1. Select a PDF from your device.
  2. Pixurity scans it locally and shows a privacy report.
  3. Inspect the values it found, including the full field list.
  4. Clean the file: document-level metadata is removed.
  5. Pixurity verifies the exact final PDF.
  6. Download the cleaned copy.

Clean metadata without flattening the PDF

Pixurity removes supported document metadata without rasterizing, re-compressing or visually rebuilding your pages. Page content, fonts and images are copied unchanged. PDFs vary widely, though, so some documents may behave differently: digitally signed PDFs lose signature validity when changed, and PDF/A files may no longer validate as PDF/A once their XMP packet is removed.

Your PDF stays on your device

Cleaned downloads may be kept in browser storage on your device, including after tab closure. See the Privacy Policy for cleanup details. Saving depends on browser permissions; a download request is not confirmation that a file was saved.

Pixurity processes PDFs locally in your browser. The document, its file name and its extracted metadata are not uploaded to Pixurity's servers for scanning or cleaning.

What “Cleaned & verified” means for PDFs

After cleaning, Pixurity scans the exact bytes of the final PDF you will download. It is marked “Cleaned & verified” only if no supported findings or raw metadata markers remain and the PDF reopens with the same page count. Failed results are not offered for download; verified results become available after preparation. This covers the metadata types Pixurity supports; it is not a guarantee about every possible proprietary format. Have many documents? Use the bulk PDF metadata cleaner. PDF metadata questions

What metadata can a PDF contain?

A PDF can store document properties such as title, author, subject, keywords, the application that created it, the PDF producer, creation and modification dates, an XMP metadata packet, document IDs and application-specific data. Pixurity shows the values it actually finds in your file.

How do I remove the author from a PDF?

Drop the PDF into the tool above, review the report and choose to clean it. Pixurity removes the Author field from the document information dictionary and the creator fields in the XMP packet, then verifies the final PDF before you download it. Word processors often copy your account or computer user name into these fields.

Can Pixurity remove Creator and Producer information?

Yes. The Creator (the application that made the original document) and Producer (the software that wrote the PDF) are removed together with the rest of the document information dictionary and XMP metadata.

Can Pixurity remove PDF creation and modification dates?

Yes. Most PDFs record when they were created and last modified, often with a time zone. Pixurity lists these dates and removes them when you clean the file.

Does removing PDF metadata change the visible document?

Pages are not changed. Pixurity removes document-level metadata structures and rewrites the PDF's object table; page content, fonts and images are copied unchanged — nothing is rasterized, re-compressed or OCR'd. PDF/A documents lose their XMP packet, which PDF/A requires, so they may no longer validate as PDF/A.

Does Pixurity upload my PDF?

No. Your PDF is read, scanned and cleaned inside your browser. The document, its file name and its metadata are not sent to Pixurity's servers for scanning or cleaning.

Can Pixurity clean password-protected PDFs?

No. Encrypted or password-protected PDFs can't be inspected or cleaned without the password, and Pixurity never uploads files as a workaround. The tool tells you the file is encrypted and shows no results, because none could be read reliably.

What happens if a PDF is damaged or incomplete?

PDFs without a valid end-of-file structure or a readable page tree are refused as damaged. Pixurity does not try to repair them, so it never reports a broken file as cleaned.

What happens to digitally signed PDFs?

Changing a signed PDF breaks its signature. Pixurity warns you before cleaning a PDF that appears to be signed, asks you to confirm, and never recreates or fakes signatures.

Can PDFs contain AI or provenance metadata?

Yes. Some tools embed C2PA Content Credentials or AI-related fields in PDF metadata. Pixurity detects supported C2PA manifest stores embedded in the PDF and removes it when cleaning. It reads metadata only; it does not judge the text or images on your pages.

How does Pixurity verify that metadata was removed?

After cleaning, Pixurity scans the exact bytes of the final PDF you will download for the supported metadata structures. The file is marked “Cleaned & verified” only if no supported findings or raw markers remain and it reopens with the same page count. Failed results cannot be downloaded; verified downloads enable after preparation, with server-confirmed usage also required for Bulk Pass. This does not prove that no hidden information of any kind remains.

Is the PDF metadata remover free?

Yes. Single PDFs are scanned, cleaned and verified for free without an account, and the Bulk PDF Cleaner is free for up to 3 PDFs per batch. Paid plans add volume, not better cleaning. Paid plans are ad-free.
